Innovation and sustainability in water

We pioneer technology and business model solutions that make Madagascar’s piped water systems profitable – and thus sustainable.

This ensures that treated, affordable and safe water is available to all our customers, year round.

This girl in the village of Ambinanibe collects water from a dirty beach, because the piped water systems they once had broke down.

Endur’O repairs broken systems; ensures the water is treated and thus safe to drink; and guarantees 95% uptime for 15+ years.

A passion for professionalism

A multitude of reasons explain why most of Madagascar’s piped water systems – often built by NGOs with donor money – break shortly after construction, never to be repaired again. Everything from lack of spare parts, absent technical capacity, remote locations, untrained staff: the list is long.

However, first-principles-thinking shows that a single reason underpins it all: money. When properly funded, spare parts, transport, qualified staff are easily solved, and technically maintaining water systems is hardly rocket science. Solve the problem ‘where does the money come from’ and you solve water sustainability in Madagascar. Endur’O does this by improving water sales revenues, reducing costs by using clever tech, adding a carbon credit revenue stream, and achieving economies of scale.

Climate-proof supply

Many piped systems run dry during the hot season, because deforestation and climate-change have reduced the flow from springs. By drilling boreholes, we add capacity – ensuring water is always available.

Prepaid Smart Taps

Malagasy law requires water to be paid for. We install smart taps which dispense water if a customer holds a card containing digital ‘water credits’ to the tap. These credits are purchased upfront, at a tariff that is affordable also for the very poor.

Carbon Credits

Most of our customers are extremely poor, and hence revenues from water sales alone is insufficient to sustain our business. Revenues from the sale of carbon credits complements our income, and unlocks a virtuous scaling cycle.

Water Treatment

All our systems provide filtered, chlorinated water to ensure it remains potable, also when taken home in jerrycans. We regularly test all water systems for priority chemical and bacteriological contamination.

Systems that enable scaling

We use streamlined business processes, standardized technologies and AI to work lean and cost-effectively. This enables us to scale rapidly and add new systems to our portfolio month after month,

We have fun

We love what we do and you will find us as much in the field as in the office. Working in Madagascar is not easy: mud, rivers, intense heat, bushfires, or cyclones: we take it in stride and enjoy the adventure.

Scaling is Key

NGOs and government have for decades encouraged private sector operators to manage piped water systems. A few operators do stellar work but many others quickly give up when revenues hardly cover costs. Not a single operator has scaled moret than a few tens of systems, and this in a country of ~30 million people…

We design our technology and business models for scale.
